This is the type of movie where Olivia cries, "That's like racism for dogs!" when told of Denver's ban on pitbulls. It promotes taking care of others and contains positive conservative references to family and the military. The movie also suggests that the dog, Bella, has faith in order to make it back to Lucas. Some children may be scared from a group of coyotes trying to attack the main dog, Bella.

Appearing nearly human with empathy and communicative facial tics, the dog’s persona draws the audience in and spins a story that depicts familial bonds and an adventurous epic to healing and reconciliation. Bryce Dallas Howard provides the voice of the titular pooch who serves as the story’s narrator. If you are dog lover you must watch the movie of this puppy who has traveled 400 mile to meet its owner. With some beautiful expression captured of the puppy. I really love watching this movie and recommend everyone to give a shot.

Bella the dog was thankfully a real animal, and she did a fine job carrying the story on her canine shoulders. Bryce Dallas Howard narrated Bella’s thoughts, and was pleasing enough in an earnest way. Bella meets a lot of nice people along her journey, and I loved the bookend scenes with the disabled vets. No one really stood out though, which was appropriate in this kind of flick. The writer did a great job having the POV center almost entirely on Bella.

She's tempted, but her heart belongs at home, with Lucas. Bella’s pitbull mother gets taken away by a dog catcher who’s being influenced by a villainous real estate developer who wants to tear down some rundown houses which are home to numerous stray dogs and cats. Bella, finds a loving new family with Lucas (Jonah Hauer-King), who works at a VA hospital, and his depressed war veteran mother Terri . We also get to meet co-worker and love interest Olivia . This version ofA Dog's Way Home touches on real issues like Denver's laws against pitbulls and veterans suffering from PTSD, though they're periphery to Bella's own simple adventures.

Until about two-thirds of the way through the film when you realize that there may be a surprisingly dark hidden message scribbled in the corner by an embittered card maker. We’ve all been there, enjoying a movie, when nature calls. Before you know it, you’re not watching the movie so much as watching for a chance to make a mad dash to the restroom.

It has a few similarities to the 1993 Disney film Homeward Bound, which I used to love as a kid, and has not just one but TWO dogs and a cat finding their way back home. Oh yeah, just to be clear, A Dog’s Way Home isn’t just about a dog, cats are a very important part of the story too. Maybe there’s another market for Hollywood to explore and use real cats instead of the CGI-heavy creatures in this film. Bella’s pit bull lineage comes back to haunt her even though she really doesn’t look like the breed. It turns out that Denver, where the story is set, has a law mandating the capture of pit bulls if they’re found outside.

Also, there’s some light politically correct elements. For example, one couple appears to be homosexual, though this situation is treated in a subtle way. Also, the movie has a slight environmentalist bent, with some negative anti-capitalist examples of a businessman destroying the homes of animals. A majority of the acting, as it were, is left up to the voice work by Bryce Dallas Howard, who carries most of the film by herself.

Even so, A DOG’S WAY HOME shows the tremendous love animals can offer people. There are obvious tear jerking manipulation going on here. The veterans aspect is really pulling on the heart strings. It got too convenient with the reunion in the wolf attack.

These include a showdown with a pack of wolves and an encounter with Axel , an ill-fated homeless man. Yet, though billed as a family film, director Charles Martin Smith’s adaptation features various elements that make it unsuitable for youngsters. They include not only frightening scenes but an interlude quietly advancing the relentless Hollywood drive to mainstream homosexuality. This film really plays on all strings of human emotions, and my wife had a flashflood of tears when watching, making me laugh as usual.... So if you can be adult enough to overlook the agendas and stereotypes and enjoy a nicely paced family movie reminiscent of 'Homeward Bound' without the sassiness, do so.

In A DOG WAY’S HOME, a young man named Lucas finds an adorable puppy, Bella, who needs a home, the two become best friends, but when she runs away from her temporary shelter, Bella must find her way back to Lucas. A DOG’S WAY HOME has a positive and heartwarming moral worldview, slightly marred by some light politically correct elements and a rambling plotline will leave viewers wishing they were watching a classic family movie like HOMEWARD BOUND. But the movie's second half, which deals with the series of sad to seriously upsetting obstacles Bella faces once she's separated from Lucas, is overlong. And when Bella ends up with homeless Axel , things get downright depressing. The theme of veterans suffering from mental illness works in the context of service dogs, but Axel's situation seems a bit heavy for what's otherwise clearly a family-targeted film. There's a brief moment of happiness when Bella temporarily lives with a kind married couple who want to adopt her.

The film is unapologetically feel-good while unabashedly manipulating your feelings, even though it is hard to knock a film that serves up cats and dogs living peacefully while giving each other endless Eskimo kisses. When young puppy Bella finds herself separated from her beloved owner, she begins an epic 400-mile quest to return home and be reunited with him. Along the way, Bella meets a series of new friends and touches the lives of each in her own, unique way. Vulnerable because of local anti-pit bull ordinances, Bella is subject, under certain circumstances, to impoundment and even euthanasia. So Lucas decides to send her away to live with Olivia’s sister in New Mexico until he and Terri can move to a new house beyond the city limits.

Still, she enjoys every chance to put her music and musical theater knowledge to good use, particularly when it intersects with her love of superhero movies. But it’s all relatively harmless, and anyone who loves dogs will overlook the story’s formulaic aspects and just enjoy having their heartstrings pulled. The talented human performers on hand, including Wes Studi as a police captain who shows up to set things right at the conclusion, are just a bonus. What sets A Dog's Way Home above the pack of most animal movies is that while the film is perfectly suitable for children, it's actually an adult movie...the emotional highs of the film have been designed more for grown-ups [than kids. A Dog's Way Home has a bit too much filler thrown in to pad out the runtime, and the segments at home feel very detached from the dog's journey back home, but it's a cute and heartwarming story that any dog lover will enjoy. Years later, Bella and Lucas become best friends, doing everything together, but the man who owns the land is still after Bella.
